About ANAB ISO/IEC 17024

You have questions, we have answers.

Essential Drawers Image
What accredited programs does LIUNA Training offer?

LIUNA Training currently offers two personnel certification programs under its ANAB ISO/IEC 17024 Accreditation: one for LIUNA Training affiliate instructors and another for apprenticeship coordinators. Both credentials are characterized by standards-driven, competency-based, industry-best practices, and successful completion of a rigorous written qualification assessment.

What are the certification eligibility requirements for Instructors?

To take the LIUNA Training Instructor Certification Exam, Instructors must meet the following criteria:

1. Provide documentation proving employment as an instructor at a LIUNA Training fund.

2. Provide documentation proving 80 contact hours of teaching experience. All teaching experience is acceptable.

3. Teaching Prerequisites:
(a) Take LIUNA Training baseline assessment for teaching
(b) Either pass LIUNA Training’s Principles of Instruction and Learning-Centered Training courses, or successfully complete and pass equivalent training offered by a LIUNA Training approved third-party and pass LIUNA Training’s Teaching Assessment.

4. General Education Skills:
(a) Math and Reading: must attain a minimum scale score of 525 in reading and minimum scale score of 500 in combined math on the TABE.
(b) Computer Literacy: must attain a minimum score of 70% on LIUNA Training’s computer assessment; have successfully passed LIUNA Training’s Basic Computer course; or have successfully passed equivalent third-party training.

What are the certification renewal requirements for Instructors?

Certified Instructors are required to renew their certification annually through one of three available options:

1. Successfully complete continuing education offered by LIUNA Training via the Annual Instructor Conference (AIC);

2. Successfully complete a professional skills development class offered by a third party. LIUNA Training must pre-approve this training to ensure it aligns with LIUNA Training’s skill standards and is acceptable as continuing education;

3. Submit documentation of having led 120 contact hours of instruction using LIUNA Training curricula (unless local, provincial, or government regulatory agencies require use of specific curriculum when conducting training). This option can only be used for two consecutive years. The following year, the certified instructor must attend continuing education through either option 1 or option 2 above.

What are the certification eligibility requirements for Apprenticeship Coordinators?

To take the LIUNA Training Apprenticeship Coordinator Certification Exam, apprenticeship coordinators must meet the following criteria:

1. Provide documentation proving employment as an apprenticeship coordinator at a LIUNA Training fund.

2. Provide documentation proving a minimum of two years experience as an apprenticeship coordinator for a USDOL or provincial registered apprenticeship program. Experience with programs other than a Laborers program is acceptable.

3. General Education Skills.
(a) Reading: must attain a reading scale score of 535 or above on the TABE.
(b) Computer Literacy: must successfully pass LIUNA Training’s apprenticeship coordinator computer assessment with a minimum score of 70%, or successfully pass equivalent third-party training.

4. Provide documentation of successful completion of prerequisite training courses: Fundamentals of Apprenticeship and Apprenticeship Management and Operation, or approved third-party equivalent.

What are the certification renewal requirements for Apprenticeship Coordinators?

Certified Apprenticeship Coordinators are required to renew their certification annually through one of three available options:
1. Successfully complete continuing education offered by LIUNA Training (via the Annual Apprenticeship Conference-AAC).

2. Documentation of a minimum of 40 hours of attendance at relevant Apprenticeship Council meetings, regional apprenticeship meetings, or other apprenticeship-related trainings. This option can only be used for two consecutive years. The following year, the certified apprenticeship coordinator must attend continuing education through LIUNA Training (AAC) or a pre-approved 3rd party provider.

3. Complete and pass a professional skills class by a third party. LIUNA Training must pre-approve this training to ensure it matches LIUNA Training’s skill standards and is acceptable as continuing education.

How long is a certification valid for?

LIUNA Training Instructor and Apprenticeship Coordinator certifications are each valid for a period of one year. The renewal period begins January 1 and ends December 31 of each calendar year.

What happens if a certificant does not renew his/her credential?

If a certified person does not fulfill the annual credential maintenance requirement, his/her certification will expire. To reinstate it, he/she will have to retake and pass the certification exam.

What happens if a candidate does not pass the certification exam?

Candidates have three chances per application to pass the exam. Applications are valid for one year. If the application period expires, candidates must submit a new application in order to retest.

What are the guidelines for use/misuse of certifications?

A LIUNA Training Instructor and Apprenticeship Coordinator Certifications are only valid:

  • for the period indicated
  • if it has LIUNA Training’s certification logo, is signed by a LIUNA Training official and is embossed with the LIUNA Training stamp
  • in its original form (Photocopies of certifications are not acceptable as proof of certification)

LIUNA Training Certification holders must:

  • neither obtain nor use certifications and/or the LIUNA Training certification logo, nor allow their use by a third party, in a manner that may be dishonest or fraudulent.
  • not use the certification in such a manner as to bring the certification body (LIUNA Training and Education Fund) into disrepute, and not make any statement regarding the certification which LIUNA Training may consider misleading or unauthorized.
  • discontinue the use of all claims to certification that contain any reference to LIUNA Training or certification upon suspension or revocation of certification, and return any certifications issued by LIUNA Training.
  • Abide by LIUNA Training’s Code of Conduct for the relevant certification program.
  • notify LIUNA Training immediately if no longer able to fulfill the duties of a certificant (whether instructor or apprenticeship coordinator). Failure to do so will result in suspension or revocation of the certification.
  • return the certification when no longer employed by a training fund, or if the certification is suspended, expired, or revoked.
